Distance versus Speed

Well, turns out it's true. As you increase your running distance you loose that speed and sharpness. Having entered my first ever marathon, coming up in mid-October I've been increasing my weekly mileage. Inevitably, due to time constraints, it means you tend to skip those speed track sessions as your focus switches to the longer runs. (I'm up to around 35k on a Sunday morning now) As a bit of a test / reality check I decided to try a fast 10k this morning. Bugger me, I managed about 6k quickish but then really struggled for the last 4, and so slowly too. I guess it just shows you can't specialise in everything. I think I'm going to have to accept a bit of a loss of speed. After the marathon I'll switch back to 10k ready for my 'national' race next year.
Hey ho.
